Adding place card holders to a table not only shows people where to site but adds to the overall decor. Choose a place card holder that will adhere to the event's theme. Also consider the number of people coming if you plan to make the place card holders, and the cost if you plan to buy them. Use the person's name to indicate where they should sit or, for added fun, use a photo. Does this Spark an idea?
Gourd Place Holders
Buy a variety of small gourds so you have at least one for each person. On small pieces of card stock write out the name of each person at the table. Use a straight edge knife, such as an Exact-O knife, to make a small slice in the top of each gourd. Put the name card in the top of a large paperclip, and slide the other end of the paperclip into the slot. Before you slice the gourd, set it on the table to see how it will sit the best. Because gourds have such different shapes, the actual top may not be what faces up when the gourd is on a flat surface.
Write the person's name on card stock or get a photo of the person. Minimize or crop each photo on your computer to make them the same size. Print the photo out, cut it out and place it in the paperclip.
Cupcake Place Holders
Bake enough cupcakes so there is one pastry per person. Put color frosting on each cupcake to coordinate with the theme of the event. Write out each person's name on a small piece of card stock. If you are not impressed with your own writing, you can print the names using a computer.
Cut the names out and place each card into the top of a large paperclip. Then insert each paper clip into a cupcake. The cupcakes will be the name card holders, and once guests are done with their meal, they can eat the cupcakes. Doing this will save you from having to create a separate dessert. If you're feeling more adventurous, you can use icing to write each guest's name on the cupcakes.
