Table Decoration Ideas for Adults

Table Decoration Ideas for Adults

Having a large children's party may call for disposable plates, easy-clean tablecloths and unbreakable dinnerware and place setting accents. But, if you're hosting a casual lunch or elegant dinner party just for the adults, you have more freedom to bring in fragile decor or more sophisticated decorations to please the eye. Does this Spark an idea?

Bottles and Candles

Make your own wine labels with table numbers on them for a larger adults-only event, or use old, empty wine bottles as vases for fresh-cut flowers or votive candle holders. Place a large cluster of clear bottles in various sizes and shapes with votives, tapered and tea light candles set inside for an elegant lighting touch. Colored glass works well for bursts of color.

Hanging Decor

With no little hands batting and pulling at things that might fall on their heads, you can hang all the decorations you want from above, provided they're light and properly hooked. String a length of fairy lights through the centers of fresh day lily blossoms for a fragrant spring garland above a dinner or buffet table. Hang a large paper mache string globe just above the center of the table, or hang an entire cluster, and vary the height of the globes for visual interest. Pendant lamps, paper and floral chandeliers and strings of glass ornaments hanging from the ceiling also work well.

Vintage Style

Incorporate decor that adds a touch of nostalgia for your adult dinner guests. Serve dessert in tiny vintage teacups, mugs and saucers. Bring in mismatched chairs from a variety of different eras with cushions or upholstery in a bold, contemporary color and luxurious fabric. Feature a set of Depression glass dinnerware found at a thrift store, or line a long table with tiny brass votive holders. You can also choose one era, and stick with that as inspiration for a themed party.

Crafty Decor

Even though you're planning a table spread for adults, you can take ideas from kids decor and activities by crafting your own table decor. If you're handy with a needle, embroider your guests' names on tiny handkerchiefs for place settings, or fold your own paper or fabric flowers for a quirky luncheon table. Sew together colorful fabric scraps for a homemade party garland, or hand write your own place cards for a welcoming touch.
