Weddings involving sit-down dining require that the guests know where they are seated. In most circumstances, the bride and groom designate seating arrangements. Usually, a place card is placed on the table where the guest is to sit. Wedding place cards keep confusion to a minimum and allow certain people to be grouped together, such as husbands and wives.
Position
Wedding place cards are usually put at the top of the plate on the table, but they can be laid on top of the napkin.
Bi-Fold Cards
Write the guest's name on both sides of a bi-fold card. This allows the guest to know where he is seated and people on the other side of the table to read his name.
Full Names
Proper etiquette dictates that the guest's entire name be written out (i.e., Mr. Jake Porter). It can be confusing to write just the guest's first name, and it appears less formal.
Format
Wedding place cards can be hand written, professionally designed by a calligrapher or printed on a computer.
Spouses
Seat husbands and wives at the same table but apart from one another. It is common to alternate males and females.
Couples
Traditionally, unmarried couples that attend a wedding together are seated at different tables.
Size
The size of a place card is about 1 1/2 inches high by 2 inches wide and no larger than the size of a gift label.
