Setting the table for Easter dinner should be colorful and bright. Use spring and Easter decor for centerpieces, and create a unique look by making your own place cards simply and quickly. These place card holders will let your guests know where to sit at the dinner table, and they do not take a lot of time to make. Does this Spark an idea?
Plastic Eggs
Get a plastic Easter egg for each place card. Open it up and stuff one side with Easter grass. Place a few malt ball candy eggs inside on top of the grass. Cut a strip of green construction paper or card stock about 1/2 inch wide and 4 inches long. Fringe the top of the strip to look like grass. Tape the strip of paper into a ring just wide enough for the plastic egg to sit in. Using a permanent marker, write one person's name on the outside of each egg. Put the egg inside the ring of paper and place the egg in front of the plates on the table.
Chickie Cards
Cut out small rectangles measuring 8 inches by 4 inches from a neutral-colored card stock. Fold it in half so it is now a square shape measuring 4 inches by 4 inches. Trace a basic chick outline on the front of the card. Put a thin layer of glue on the chick, being careful not to get outside the lines. Dust the chick with yellow cornmeal and allow to dry. Shake off any excess cornmeal. Add a black lentil bean for an eye and an orange lentil for the beak. Spread glue around the feet of the chick and sprinkle dried herbs and spices such as rosemary or parsley. Write the guests' names at the top of each card and stand them up beside each place setting.
Robin Nests
Purchase artificial moss at the craft store, as well as a few fake robin eggs. These eggs are smaller than regular chicken eggs, and won't spoil, so they are perfect for crafting. Form nests out of the moss; don't make them too big, or they will dominate the table. About 3 inches across is perfect. Place two or three eggs in the middle. Write the guests' names on small pieces of card stock. You can either place the cards beside the nests, or tape them to a toothpick and stick them into the nest.
Hats
Purchase small straw hats and bonnets at the craft store. Make sure you have one for each guest. Hot glue tiny flowers, ribbon trim and bows onto the hat. Cut a small piece of card stock and write the guest names on them. Attach them to the hats with the ribbon and place one at each table setting.
Food and Candy
For a very quick and cheap place card idea, fill small cupcake papers with jelly beans and place them at each plate. Write the guests' names on small card and prop them up against the cups. You can also purchase tiny straw baskets at the craft store and use those instead of cupcake papers. If you like to bake, make egg-shaped sugar cookies the day before Easter. Frost them and pipe a name on each cookie. Put them around the table and allow guests to eat them for dessert or take home at the end of the day.
Bud Vases
Give each person their own flower for a place card. Get a bud vase for each guest; they can be clear, white or colored. Purchase flowers with firm stems, like tulips, roses or carnations. Cut the stems so the flowers stick out just a few inches above the rim of the bud vase. Write the guests' name on a card and place it on the table with the vase on top. Make sure the name is visible; you can stick the card to the vase with tape, but it doesn't look as nice. Send the vase and flower home with the guest at the end of the day.
