At a wedding reception, table numbers can enhance the theme and serve as the finishing touch for table settings. To make your numbers work seamlessly into the decor, use materials that work with the wedding theme or natural setting. Numbers should be easily visible and should look like an intentional part of the table design.
Wine Labels
If you are having a special wine bottled for your wedding, use the labels as table number markers. Design simple labels that have large numbers as the main focus with the name of the wine in smaller font underneath or above. Designate three numbered bottles per table and set them so that the numbers are clearly visible. After the initial bottles have been consumed, you can ask your catering staff to bring out standard bottles.
Wooden Discs
For a rustic-themed wedding reception, use wooden slabs for table numbers. Start with a piece of a tree with a visually striking bark, like birch or knotty pine, and cut slabs that are about 2 inches thick. Sketch your table numbers onto each piece of wood and use a woodburner to burn the numbers into the surface. Work the table numbers into your centerpieces for a cohesive look or use small wooden stands to prop them up; depending on the size of the table and the individual slabs, you may need one to three per table.
Photographs
For a personal touch, work with a photographer to take pictures that will act as your table numbers. Make large numbers out of decorated cardboard or wood and take photos of you and your partner holding each number in a meaningful spot. Print the photos in black and white with the number in color, and use a simple glass clip frame to hold them. Attach a card to the bottom of each photo that explains the significance of the location in the photo; in doing so, you can give guests a look into your love.
Paper Lanterns
If you are throwing a reception that will begin at dusk or after dark, use table numbers that double as part of the lighting scheme. Start with individual candles or small, battery-powered lights. Using patterned or colored craft paper, bend a sheet to form the shape of a cylinder or rectangular tube. Flatten the paper out and use a razor to cut out numbers for your tables on two sides. Attach the edges together with clear craft glue and place the finished shape over the light or candle; the glow will come through the paper and the cutout numbers for a soft, romantic effect. Start with a variety of textured and printed papers and test with lights until you find one that achieves a look that works with your design scheme.
