How to Make Candle Holders Out of Ice

Ice candle holders give a classy look to a holiday or dinner party. You can make small tabletop-size candle holders or large holders that will line your driveway for a romantic entryway into your party. This simple project requires a freezer or a winter temperature that can freeze water to solid ice. You will need to prepare the candle holders a few days in advance to ensure they are ready for your party or event.

Instructions

    1

Punch a hole on both sides of the empty ice cream container about three inches down from the rim.

    2

Punch a hole on both sides of the top of the empty yogurt or sour cream container. The two holes should be just below the rim.

    3

Place the small container inside the large container.

    4

Thread a dowel or piece of wire through the holes in the buckets. Start on one side of the large container and pass the dowel or wire through a hole. Then thread it through the two holes of the small container and out through the other hole in the big container. This will suspend and secure the small container at the top of the large container.

    5

Slowly fill the large container with cold water. If the small container moves out of place, set a rock or pour a half cup of rice into it to keep it in place. Immerse the small container in the water up to one inch below its rim. The water should not touch the wire or dowel support.

    6

Place the containers in a deep freeze. Or, you can set it outside on a clear, cold day with a freezing temperature of about 35 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

    7

When the ice is frozen solid, place the container in your sink. Carefully remove the wire or dowel. Slowly and carefully pour hot water into the small container to heat it.

    8

Pull the small container up and out of the ice. The hole that remains is your candle well.

    9

Fill your sink with hot water and set the large container in the water. Check every few minutes whether the plastic has warmed up enough for you to ease the ice block from the container.

    10

Place appropriate-size votive or pillar candles into the candle well.
