How to Make Your Own Ponytail Holders

Scrunchies don't yank out your hair when you pull them off, and you can wear them around your wrist so you don't lose them when you're not wearing them. Scrunchies are easy enough to make by hand that kids can get involved in the project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    1

Lay the fabric with the printed side facing down. Lay the elastic down the middle of the fabric lengthwise with the end about 1/4 inch from a short edge of the fabric. Stitch the end of the elastic into place with a few small stitches. Use thread that is similar in color to the fabric you're using to make the stitches less visible.

    2

Fold the cut edge of the fabric over the sewn end of the elastic and press it into place with a hot iron. Fold the fabric lengthwise with the printed side facing inward.

    3

Stitch the fabric together along the long edge. You should have a tube of inside-out fabric with the elastic hanging from it.

    4

Turn the fabric right-side out by putting the elastic inside the tube and pulling it through. Push the fabric down over the elastic so you can hold the loose end. Bring the loose end of the elastic to the sewn end so they overlap about 1/2 inch, and stitch the loose end of the elastic on top of the sewn end.

    5

Push the other cut edge of the fabric about 1/2 inch inside the end you folded and ironed. Hold the scrunchie flat and stitch across the fold to attach the two ends. Stitch across the fold twice to make the scrunchie extra strong. The stitches won't be easily seen when the fabric is scrunched up around them.
